60 year old patient on Methotrexate: placing implants?
I have a 60 year old female patient who is taking methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis. She claims she needs to stop her medication if she is given an antibiotic, and she is miserable off of the methotrexate. Any one know about this medication and if it interferes with antibiotics or placing of implants? Have any of you placed implants in a patient on this medication?

Amoxicillin can interfere with the kidneys ability to secrete the methotrexate which can be serious . Patients on methotrexate which is an anti metabolite have had implants fail. See the ossonews archive. I think her physicians imput is critical and methotrexate is a very powerful drug, remember implants are elective . I would exercise caution.

Methotrexate is a drug with very bad side effects and your patient is lucky if she feels good while taking this drug.
Here are some things that may be a problem:
The drug can decrease the activity of her immune system, and then she can develop complications from infection.
It can cause a decrease in the number and the production of blood cells made by her bone marrow, secondarily affecting the healing after an injury (such as implant surgery).
I agree with CRS above and would encourage you to get input and clearance from her physician before planning an implant surgery.
Good luck!
