Implants for Patient with Hepatitis-B-Virus?

Dr. S asks:
A patient with missing 46,47,34,36,37& 25 has reported to me & is interested in getting Nobel Biocare implants done first of all in 46,47 region. I can place 4.3×13 mm implants in these positions. However, his blood investigation reveals HBsAg as REACTIVE. He himself revealed this to me during history taking that it has been so since 2001. Kindly guide me whether I can proceed with the Implant placement surgery & if so any special precautions that are suggested?

Dear Dr S: From your description, your patient has chronic hepatitis B and may have liver damage that could result in liver dysfunction including digestive problems, blood sugar problems, immune disorders, fat absorption problems, coagulation problems, and metabolic disorders. Besides the obvious concern of transmission of the disease to you and your patients, the patient needs to be evaluated by a physician and any pertinent treatment started. If the physician clears the patient for surgery, then it is up to you to decide if you want to undertake such surgery for the patient. Good luck.
