Implants Installed in 1995: Anybody Recognize These?
Dr. M. asks:
I have a new patient who presented with implant supported, screw retained fixed partial dentures in the maxilla and mandible. The implants were installed in 1995. I have not been able to identify these implants. Does anybody recognize these implants and can you please identify them?

The dental work was very well done. There are transmucosal abutments on each implant.
First thing to do would be to contact the dentist who did the job; and if that is not possible, unscrew the prosthesis and remove one of the TMA's on the lower right side ( so you can replace the prosthesis during the detective work) and show it to a dental lab specializing in implants they will recognize the parts..
You will be able to see if it is an internal or external hex implant, the diameter of the screw from the TMA into the implant, and the diameter of the internal thread of the TMA to which the overcasting is connected to.

My bet is on Branemark system, late Mark III or Mark IV system.
As Dr Ruddick said, the trans-mucosal abutments were introduced by Branemark system around 1993-95. Most likely these would be external hex as well, but not sure.
Contact Nobel Biocare rep, and try your luck with them. Two screwdrivers were in use then, Unigrip and Hex.
Looks like solid work, but I would place one in the third quadrant to take away the cantilever.

I send these to Attachments International. Darwin is the contact. They have always had the abutments and components that I need.

Thanks for all the input. As far a case history, the patient does not recall the oral surgeon or the restoring dentists names but thinks both are retired or no longer practicing. I'm currently waiting on a response from the insurance co. to see if they have any of that info on file but they are either taking their sweet time or no longer have the records and are just stalling. Pt. was in a car wreck, insurance coverage was from offending driver. Rt. mandible replaced w/ bone harvested from his hip..., teeth on denture have broken off (he's a grinder) that's about the extent of his knowledge on the incident. I'm following up w/ him next week for a more extensive exam. Thanks ~ Dr. M

What’s the purpose of asking us: to help him to find an appropriate treatment plan or just his curiosity about this implant brand only?
