Master in Oral Implantology Thesis: Possible Topics?
Anon asks:
I am a student working on my Masters Degree in Oral Implantology at Frankfurt University. I am looking for a topic for my Master thesis. I want to inquire about possible topics for research. I am wondering if anybody can suggest what they think would be the best possible topics in site development, surgical installation of implants, bone grafting, ridge augmentation, restoration of implants, etc. for a thesis? Thanks.

Dear Anon,
that is a good question. At the University Frankfurt you have excellent scientifical conditions (for example oral pathological department) with experts as contact persons.
Your thesis could be augmentation with HYDROXYAPATITE (with their attributes and long-term studies).
1.) Allograft Hydroxyapatite (It does not resorbe and it is similar in the structure to the human patients bone; in allgrafts could be biological risks from the human cadaver bone, but it is logically in use because humans and humans are the same species)
2.) Synthetical Hydroxyapatite (Maybe it resorbs? But the structure is not similar to the human bone. Here you do not have any biological risks.)
3.) Bovine Hydroxyapatite (It does not resorbe and it is quite similar in the structure of humans bone. In bovine hydroxyapatite you have biological risks from cows. Human bones and cow bones are different.)
In Germany the government agency "Bundesintitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte (BfArM) is responsible for the declaration of drugs and medical device products. You can compare it with the FDA in the USA.
The BfArM declared all grafting materials as medical device products except one product which is declared as a drug. That is an allograft grafting material product.
For the declaration of drugs in Germany you need a lot of time and many clinical studies.

After your thesis you will be the Master Of Science (MSC).

Dear Anon, I would concur with Dr.F. inhis statement about the University of Frankfurt. There are some topics roaming arround in germany right now that you could use, like Minimally InvasiveTechniques. One is the grafting by Tunelling technique, develloped by Dr Heuckmann from Cheemsee, that is a modern derivation of the stumpf technique. Other would be minimally invassive sinus lifting (othoscope guided) developed by dr Englecke.
a non related would be implant / abutment joint flex under pressure that is very controvertial because only ankylos and astra are considered non flex.
Best of luck

Many companies claim excellent results from their own products. Compare different common brands of synthetic bone substitute in bone regeneration over implant fixtures.

Any controversial topic would be fair, possibly studies of VERTICLE BONE GRAFTING techniques and /or materials. But........don't get involved with large data samples especially with animal studies or become a "Crusader". Maybe your department chairman's pet project that you can use 100-120 references, supports "his point of view" ,doesnt require large numbers of samples, and complicated statistics. Just get the damn paper sufficiently written, defended, published, and have the Chair's name in the #2, position as co-author. In another 10yrs it won't mean anything even if you stay in the Big University!!!!

i always thought this would be interesting:the effects of force or pressure on resorption rates (or lack thereof) of weight bearing bone vs. alveolar bone, which receives masticatory force secondarily thru teeth. theres a ton of info thru nasa life sciences on loss of weight bearing bone mass/density on astronauts in 0-g for extended periods and from extended bed rest studies. is alveolar bone unique in its rate after edentulism or does it correspond roughly to other bone resorption rates after removing impact or gravity? how can you counter act this resorption....obviously not thru placing force directly on the ridge i.e. a denture, nor thru loading implants prematurely.where is the turning point at which implants actually stimulate bone maintenance. what does nasa do to reduce loss in space flight/0-g. would it work in alveolar bone? think subtopics like irritation osteogenesis or the oral cavity as microenvironment of space (edentulous areas equal to 0-g on weight bearing bones). good luck.

Probe long term effects of using P R F.

Have any long term studies been done comparing Implants to ankylosed teeth, along the lines of longevity, lateral and/or longitudinal stresses on bone, osseous resorption, effects on opposing/adjacent dentition, etc.

Maybe you could study using the mandibular ridge split technique in two stages (BICON style) using different kinds of implants to gain ridge width in resorbed posterior mandibles. Best wishes.

My vote is for 'soft tissue integration' around the collars of implants where soft tissue meets the metal just above the crestal bone interface. The phrase was coined by Nobel many years ago, and I feel this tissue interface (compare to junctional epithelium in real teeth) is the vital area whether an implant stays integrated for long or starts losing bone from the first thread down. You may study the different implant designs (MIS has the SEVEN, Nobel has NobelACtive, etc.) and especially the long-term stability of this zone. I prefer human subjects, and the database is huge out there anyways.
Good Luck!

hi, i would suggest three topics-
1.verifying the stability of implant(regular size / short implants) placed in defect site with porous titanium granules, and it can be compared with other resorbable grafts available.
2.vertical ridge augmentation using porous titanium granules and other techniques.
3.basal implants

surface of implants system and it will be very competitive if you compare some surface of different system as there are some companies have not verify how speed healing at first months.

Hi Anon,
I am interested in pursuing a Masters program in oral implantology at Frankfurt Goethe Uni, Can u please tell me your personal experience about the program. Sorry that my post is not concerning the topic for ur thesis, But I need ur Honest feedback.
