Osstell ISQ: Worth the Investment?
Dr V. asks:
I have been researching ways to more objectively assess implant stability and came across the Osstell IDX ISQ. This instrument uses resonance frequency analysis and rates implant stability on a scale of 1 to 100. You place an Osstell SmartPeg into the uncovered implant fixture and screw it into the abutment channel then place the Osstell ISQ and tip close to the SmartPeg and it sends electromagnetic impulses into the implant fixture. Is this system reliable? Is it worth the investment? Thanks.

It took me a while to decide aswell but with their extensive research and articles published on the RFA technique pushed me over the edge so I bought one.
At first I used it on complicated cases only but have also moved towards using it on more conventional. It kind of grows on you as you get used to using it. Besides Its a small investment compared to what a failure costs if the implant is loaded prematurely and I dont longer wait unesscesary late to load which is good aswell. As for the accuracy and reliability it hasn't failed me yet. It seems to deliver what it pormises. Had it since Feb 2009
Good Luck

Check out Periotest-M at Savin Dental. I had mine for 2 years. Premature loading and failure is expensive. It can also be used on natural teeth. It measures mobility by calculating rebound velocity when it taps the tooth or the implant.

I have been using Osstell for the better part of two years and have found it to be indispensible to my practice. First, the ability to determine when to restore and when to load with objective clinical data is critical. Second, the machine becomes the gatekeeper to moving forward and takes this yoke off of my shoulders. Regarding whether to buy the Osstell or Periotest unit, I suggest you review an article by Seong et al. in the Journal of Periodontology in 2009. This article shows the potential destructive nature to Periotest versus Osstell which is noninvasive (this also makes it far more appealing than reverse torque). Osstell will probably help you to avoid 1-2 treatment failures per year which more than justifies the cost of this unit. In fairness, I have to disclose that I have spoken for this company. HOWEVER, it is innovations such as these that enhance my ability to achieve success further building my implant practice. I am more than happy to associate myself with outstanding products such as this. Try it for yourself and you will never go back to the way you were practicing.

Ostell isq is quite necessary when it comes to immediate loadind. ( which in my cases stand for 60% of implant cases).
I bought mine for 2700€ ( 3000 usd). I think it's too much regarding the item per se , but it's reasonable when it comes to its value...
