Patient with Zona Infection: How Long to Wait for Dental Implants?

I have a patient who presents with a recent Zona infection [shingles, herpes zoster] 4 months prior. Â I had treatment planned this patient for dental implants. Â His physician [dermatologist] Â has advised not to have any surgery for another few months or about 6 months after the original infection. Â The patient has recovered and is asymptomatic now and would like the implants now. Â What should I do? Â Should I tell the patient that he has to wait it out?

Call physician and talk about it. If you get a documented okay after this discussion, go ahead. If not, don't do. Unwise to go against advice of physician in this case. He is the expert here. Even though we know and understand about these diseases, your case is elective. If there is a problem and you havent gotten blessing from treating MD, your on the wrong side in everyone's eyes.

Wait for as long as the patient´s doctor tells you to. Zona sometimes comes back with flare if the patient undergoes antibiotic an antimflamatory treatment, I am guessing that´s the reason. Also primary herpes zoster manifestation is not nice and can relapse during the early months ofthe first appearence.

I'm sorry, the dermatologist in my part of the country are considered sub specialist, just as we are. I have ten cases of either basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas, that several dermatologist have burned/lasered or frozen for the last several years, only to require excision and reconstruction, once biopsied. I have not literature searched this, but I would be willing to bet a co2 laser that there is no science to support the suggestion, that a patient needs to wait anytime after resolve of shingles, for implant surgery. I would defer to the patient's PCP. BV. Vinci Oral and Facial Surgery. Baton Rouge La.

Not to confuse the issue, is a vaccine indicated? I don't know much about this but I have seen patients with chronic shingles very painful. Unfortunately the virus lies dormant in the head and trunk region. My plan would be to ask my infectious disease md colleague, I agree with Vinci, get a second opinion. That said the other posts are very wise you need md clearance and this is elective, I'd wait it out.To be really safe, I'd ask my ID guy. (I'mjust curious if there is a protocol)Good post
