Bone Graft: How Long Can I Wait Before Getting Dental Implants?

I need a lower bone graft in front area, so that dental implants can be placed. Do I need to get dental implants right away after the bone graft? I’m not sure I can afford the implants. How long will the bone last from a bone graft, if I don’t get implants right away?

The healing time for bone grafts in the area you describe can run from 3 to 6 months prior to dental implant placement. In terms of your other question concerning the longevity of the graft, this is a more difficult issue and unique to each patient. The amount of time that a bone graft will last before it will begin to be lost to atrophy is different for each individual. It is not possible, therefore, to give a specific timeframe as to how long you can wait. However, I would not wait over 12 months after the graft to get an implant. Finally, since your issue seems to be a financial one, I would also suggest speaking to your dentist about financing plans for dental implants. You may not necessarily need to pay for the implant right away. Speak to your dentist about various payment plans that he or she may offer.Hope this helps.
