Bone Graft After Implant: Is it Normal to Lose Bone?

I had a bone graft due to loss of my own bone after already having a dental implant. The area has now got a slight infection and I am also losing some of the bone from the graft, which keeps coming out of my gum. Is this normal?

Loosing a little of the bone graft particles after the procedure is normal since the area is often overfilled, but an infected bone graft is not, and is a complication that usually results in failure of the graft. Sometimes with an antibiotic a portion of the graft can be saved, but if the graft material is infected it will have to be removed or it will come out on it’s own. Success in treating bone loss around an implant is usually dependent on factors such as how well the contaminated implant surface is treated, how good is the blood supplu to the graft, how many walls of bone exist around the graft to provide the necessary cells, etc… You will probably have to wait a few months before you know the results now. Good luck! Dr. Carlos Boudet
