Braces instead of Implants?

2 years ago I have had my molar extracted. This caused my teeth to be spaced out a little bit. Then yesterday I got another molar extracted, so I’m worried that it will affect my tooth alignment. I cannot afford dental implants so is it ok if i go for braces instead? What are the other alternatives other than dental implants? Thank you.

Braces will correct the spaces that are a concern to you, but it may not be possible if the space left by the extracted molar is large, or if the bone has been lost after the extraction. Assuming that you have enough bone, implants are the best choice. If the teeth adjacent to the missing molar have large fillings or are damaged, a fixed bridge may be the most practical solution, since it protects the damaged teeth and replaces the missing molar at the same time. Good luck!Dr. Carlos Boudet

Hi It is difficult if not impossible to close large spaces of missing teeth with orthodontics and this is usually not the best approach. It is used more often for smaller teeth in the front where the orthodontist can close the spaces. Dental implants are the only viable and long term solution to replacing missing molars. Alternatives are partial dentures which I don't recommend. Dr. Kazemi
