Having diabetes is not a contraindication for implants. If your diabetes is uncontrolled, however, then you are more likely to have problems with the surgery such as poor healing, infection and even failure. There are no treatments to “harden the gums” as you say. The bone in the upper jaw is softer and not as strong as in the lower jaw. Also you may not have enough bone for implants and may need bone grafting. Talk to a surgeon that does implants to determine if you can have implants placed. Good luck! Dr. Carlos Boudet
