Crown on Implant Broke After Some Years: Is this Normal?

I had a dental implant done 8 years ago and the crown recently failed and broke up like it became very fragile. Is this normal and to be expected? What should I do?

Although rare, crowns may fail after many years. The question is why it failed? Your dentist should look for possible reasons: Bite issues, crown fit problems, unusual forces on the crown, etc. When the new crown is made, the dentist can then incorporate their conclusions into the design to help prevent it again. A crown can break after years of use whether it is on an implant or on a tooth. Since the implant is fused to the bone, the forces applied to a crown on an implant are more likely to do damage than a crown on a tooth that has a periodontal ligament that allows a small amount of movement when forces are exerted on it. Other things that may have caused the crown to break is the way it was constructed, whether there was adequate room for the porcelain, whether the porcelain was properly supported by metal if it was a PFM crown, whether you clench or grind the teeth, etc... A crown can last a lot longer than eight years if it is designed and built properly, so you would have to look at your case in more detail to determine the reason yours failed. Good luck! Carlos A.
