I’m On Evista: Can I Get Implants?
I was given Evista, and one dentist says that it is classified as a bisphosphonate. So I was told I can’t get dental implants. Is this true?

No that is not true! Dental surgeons have found that an extremely low percentage of patients taking Bisphosphonates (less than 1%) have experienced healing problems following dental treatment (not related to implant surgery but any type of dentistry). Those at greatest risk are people taking the medications IV. Also we have found that if you are taking the Bisphosphonate in pill form for greater than 3 years the risk appears greater. But again the risk is extremely low even in these two scenarios. There is a blood test called a "CTX test" which some surgeons believe can predict healing in Bisphosphonate patients. If the test indicates risk you can discuss taking a "drug holiday" with your prescribing physician to alter Bisphosphonate levels
