Loose dental implant from day one: what should I do?

Now am 16 months out from completion of original implantation (a several month process) The implant was noted to be loose from my first post op visit shortly after the procedure. Dentist said I could either just leave it alone and do nothing or I could undergo the entire (several month long) ordeal all over again. He asked me to come back in in six months, which is now. I really need to know the risks if we continue waiting and watching.. can I expect that will it just get looser and looser, and if so does that mean I’m losing more bone and creating a bigger problem? I’m also concerned about having it removed/replaced as my dentist he told me he wouldn’t be the one redoing it…he’d have one of his junior partners do it which makes me concerned.

An experienced implantologist has an excellent appreciation for bone & soft tissue physiology, and systemic health. Present standards of implant placement require stability of the implant on placement (a range of torque readings in Newton Centimeters) which vary with patient & implant factors. Your implant never reached stability and continuous movement contributes to continued bone loss. Select your implant surgeon based on both academic experience( continuing education at academic institutions) and clinical experience(numerous cases over the years). See the completed cases and seek references from patients. Obtain a detailed treatment plan from the clinician and obtain a second opinion. Good Luck. Theodore M Grossman DMD
