Sinus Lift: Signs of Rupture and Risk of Infection?

I recently had a sinus lift and two days later saw a blood clot with white particles about 6 hours after I blew my nose. Presumably the white particles were bone graft particles? I have left word for my periodontist, but I’m wondering if what I experienced indicates a failure of the procedure. Is this indicative of a rupture of the sinus membrane and is there a resulting risk of infection?

The observation of white particles (bone graft material) form nose indicates release of the graft into sinus due to membrane perforation. The success of the procedure depends on size of perforation and whether it was repaired before placement of graft. The repair involves folding of membrane onto itself and placement of resorbable membrane to contain the graft beneath. Infection is not necessarily an increased risk however the success of graft may be in question. I recommend you to ask the surgeon what occured and what is the size of the perforation and how it was repaired. Dr. Kazemi
