Wearing a Retainer with a False Tooth: What Are My Alternatives?
I am a healthy 19 year old and need an implant for an upper canine tooth that has been missing for several years (surgical extraction of an impacted tooth). I wear a retainer now that contains the false tooth, until I can afford a better alternative. Any advice on what I can do? Is a mini dental implant a good option in my case? It seems more affordable. What would be the disadvantages to having a mini implant? Thanks!

A regular dental implant is the treatment of choice for long term success. Mini implants are not recommended due to high failure rate.Another alternative is Maryland bridge that essentially is bonded to adjacent teeth. These may look good but generally do not last very long time and requires gentle preparation of adjacent teeth. All things considered, a regular implant is your best option.thanks Dr. kazemi

The canine is a tooth that receives many forces during your normal eating functions.
Although you could put a crown on a mini implant in the position of the canine, it is not recommended, since the mini is not designed to support the forces that you would place on it.
Your best alternative is a conventional implant. It is the only one that will prevent further bone loss in the area. Until the time comes that you can do this, your choices are:
1- Hawley retainer with tooth attached ( covers part of the roof of the mouth).
2- Essix retainer with tooth attached (no wires and does not cover the roof of the mouth).
3- Acid etched bridge (attaches the canine to the two adjacent teeth with a bonding procedure.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Hi, can anyone tell me why my dentist has made me an Essex Pontic instead of a partial denture? It looks dreadful and I'm confused why I was not made a snap on or retainer with tooth attached.
