Referred a patient with Thalassemia Minor: Contraindication to implants?

I recently was referred a patient with Thalassemia Minor – the mild form of Thalassemia [the more severe form is Thalassemia Major].  Are there any contraindications to placing dental implants in these patients? Are there any special precautions that I should take? Are there any lab tests that I should order? Should I request a medical consult from the patient’s physician? Is there a decreased chance of success?

You may want to check the May 2010 Osseo archives there is a reference to Misch's article on implant placement in this disease. I'd also get a physician consult on the severity of the disease and a good consent. Good post, good luck!

I have had cases like this and basically you need to be extra careful to prevent infections, specially if the spleen has been altered or removed. For the rest if is a case of minor , there is no real problem, just treat the patient as you would an anemic one. best of luck
