Water Hose to Implant Handpiece: change after each surgery?

There is some discussion in my implant study group on whether there is a need to change the water hose from the sterile water bag to the handpiece after each use for implant surgery. Since the system is closed and there is no suck back with an electric handpiece some feel you only need to flush the line with sterile water prior to using. Others feel you need to change the hose after every patient. What do you do? Any help or suggestions with this question will be appreciated.

Well if you are trying to maintain a sterile field you should change at least the tubing to avoid cross contamination. Otherwise what is the point. There is no preservative in the sterile water like a multi draw medication bottle. I don't think your patient would appreciate having contaminated tubing used on them, it's not worth the $20 spent on tubing to have the risk. I like to use external irrigation with disposable syringes and have the assistant keep the field wet, I stop using the pump, it's a lot easier and many implant systems are externally irrigated now. You could also use an extension tube and switch that out. Good luck.

Thanks- I have followed Midwest Implant Institute protocal and we have always changed hoses in our office and just added the cost to the procedure fee. But some in our group didn't see the need. I'll let them know at our next meeting.

You are very welcome, it is nice you have a study group!

If you were having an implant placed , would you want sterile tubing used on you? I sure would .. I don't see how you can justify not changing it if you are after a sterile field. The cost to me is irrelevant

You must change_it says the rule because patient fluid will have back flowed into the tubing there is no device that can guarantee no_back flow But some simply cut a length of tube...... to save $$$
