Neoss Dental Implants: Discussion

This week, we’re going to open the thread to a discussion of the Neoss Dental Implant System.

Neoss is a relatively simple implant system from the United Kingdom. It has implant fixtures in diameters 3.25mm, 3.5mm, 4.0mm, 4.5mm, 5.0mm and 5.5mm. The system utilizes two basic implants – the Bimodal and the Proactive. The Proactive is the newer version and its surface is blasted, etched and chemically treated. The prosthetic system uses an internal trilobe connection.

One of the unique properties of the implant fixture design, that we would like to point out, is that all of the implant sizes – except for the 3.25mm – share the same size platform which is 4.1mm in diameter. The apical third of the implant fixture is thread-cutting and self-tapping. Neoss also has a unique bone mill and trephine kit for removal of bone that has grown over the implant fixture in a two-stage surgical protocol.

With regards to the company’s newer Proactive Implant, what we found interesting was the description of the implant as a: Hydrophilic implant. According to Neoss:

“Rapid wetting of an implant surface enhances protein aggregation and can accelerate fibrin network formation. Uniquely, the ProActive surface utilises electrowetting to eliminate surface tension maximising blood and tissue fluid penetration into the surface.”

What are your thoughts on this surface characteristic and of Neoss implants in general? What do you find unique about this system?

I have used various systems for over 20 years including Nobel, 3i, ITI, Astra, lifecore and Thommen. My success rate with each has been in the very high 90% range. After more than 200 Neoss fixtures I have lost ~20% of my implants. I tried bimodal and proactive. Different lot #'s too. Anyone else?

neoss is getting poplar because of its simplicity. it doesnt come with a very busy tool kit which attract clinicians. Its a good implant with some sense but to me in an attempt to over simplify it main short coming is the single platform for all sizes. this design only give larger diameters platform switching. connection may not be as strong for large diameter implant(but system is new to comment on any potential fractures as we have heard about ankylos)

it is very interesting system,in terms of the surface characteristics, but how about the price.?

It's not a tri lobe connection, it is Neo Link: a six pointed connection. The new surface has industry equal best data to back it up.

AMM: I have had more failures with the Bimodal suface than I was comfortable with. I have been using the ProActive surface Neoss implants with the usual success rate. I had spoken with quite a few people at Neoss about the Bimodal failures. They, of course, assume that the problems are with the operator, not the implant. If that was the case then why did Neoss find it necessary to introduce the ProActive implant in the first place? I wrote off the failures to surgical errors such as not replacing drills after ten uses, and pushing the envelope too far, and to variations in patient's host responses. It's interesting to learn about other peoples' problems with the system. The implant companies will never admit to inherent problems with a product. -K

I have placed close to 1000 neoss implants over the past 4 years with success rates equivalent or better than any System I have used in the past.
