What are the absolute medical contraindications for dental implants?
In this modern era of advanced implantology more medically compromised patients are seeking dental implant rehabilitation. I would like to know if there are any absolute contraindications for dental implants? If so, where is this stated and has this been established by studies in peer revied dental journals or been stated as position papers by dental specialty organizations? Are these absolute contraindications for implants described in any text book?

This is a very tough question since everything in medicine is relative. I would focus on the bone physiology since that is essential to osteointegration. The second issue is the immune status of the patient with regards to healing. And third is mental health, ironically the only patients I have be burned on was an OCD who basically picked out her grafted case and was clueless, this also fall into the category of hygiene and long term maintenance that the patient needs to understand. Certain medications such as lithium or Bisphosphinates can also affect bone physiology. Misch's book on implants has a nice summary which can be used as a guide along with individual medical status clearance on an individual basis .

Leukemia, hypoadrenalism are absolute contraindications. All other medical conditions are relative contraindications.

Why is hypoadrenalism a contraindication? We can give exogenous steroids in these cases to accommodate the patient's inability to make "them". The majority of leukemia's have a 90% five year survival rate. Bvinci
