Zirconium Implants: Any New Developments?
Dr. K asks:
I was reviewing the comments about Zirconium Implants posted on OsseoNews back in 2007, but that’s a good 4 yrs ago. I am wondering if anyone has any new developments and updates on Zirconium Implants? These seemed to have alot of promise when they first came out and there have been some prospective studies. Anyone using these in their practice currently?

Actually i will be taking a course this weekend about the placement of zirconium implants sponsered by Z-systems.
As far as I know there are two systems out there. I think one is named Ceraroot and the other is Z-systems. Z-systems has been FDA approved for 2 years. Ceraroot is FDA approval for 1 year.
As far as my understanding, Z-systems is doing research on a new designs such as a two piece implant (where the abutment is cemented into the implant and not screwed in).
in addition, before 2 years ago, zirconium implants did not have any surface modification. Now they are roughening their implants whether it is acid etched or sand blasted (or something like that).
The truth of the matter is that there is a lot we don't know about zirconium implants. I hope to learn more about them this weekend.

I too am very much interested in Zirconium implants. I've seen some surgical placement of these types of implants, but have not heard much regarding the long-term studies.

Look Denti Sytems from Hungary they produce already 2 piece zirconia implants. It has been told that low plaque accumulation on the surface is observed. Surplus is exposed implant surface is almost esthetic.

Boy, this question was interesting. Can we have more biomaterials questions. I think dr. Shaw could panel this discussion!! bv

On the 12th of November in Bern the Zirkontagung was held by the leading opinion leaders in implantology Prof. Buser and Belser.
At this congres the Swiss made ZERAMEX came out as the leading solution in Zirconium implants, due to 2-way system, sandblasted and etched with osseointegration of 98%.

I've placed Z-Systems zirconium implants for a couple years. They're pretty much like the others in that they can fail and they can be "perfect." 'Same variables as with titanium. Gingival response is gorgeous. Integration is equivalent to titanium according to all the literature. The more you do, the better they get.
